4 ways to help you make hard choices in both work and life

4 ways to help you make hard choices in both work and life4 ways to help you make hard choices in both work and lifeLife isnt always black or white - things happen, people change and sometimes you have to make difficult choices.Heres what to keep in mind.Do something to move forwardDecision coach and travel writer Nell Wulfhart writes in The Muse that you should practice being decisive. If youre chronically indecisive, build that decision-making muscle by starting small. Give yourself 30 seconds to decide what youll have for dinner, what movie to watch, or whether you want to go out tonight. Follow through on that decision. Repeat. Then work up to bigger things. Does this give you anxiety? Ask yourself what the worst-case scenario is if you pick wrong.Think about what would happen as a resultDaniel Jacobs, CEO and co-founder of Avanoo, writes in Fortune about making difficult geschftlicher umgang decisions in Fortune. After writing about a poor cost-saving decision he made in the pas t, he lists three ways that have since helped him approach challenges when the pressure is on.One of the questions he poses is, Are you willing to live with the consequences of your decision? This might seem like a rhetorical question, but its not. Most hard decisions are made because were either a) running toward expected rewards, or b) running away from expected consequences. Strangely, humans often tend not to consider what happens if the rewards or consequences we expect dont come to pass, he continues.Think about any biasesCatherine Price, author of 101 Places Not to See Before You Die, writes on Oprah.comabout having to choose a paint color with her husband for their new apartment. She goes onto list tips for making decisions, includingthat you should be aware of biases. They can lead smart people to make dumb decisions. For example, we hate to lose mora than we like to win, which can result in behavior such as holding on to a tanking stock instead of accepting a loss. We rememb er vivid examples better than facts, which is why plane crashes stick in our heads more than statistics on air safety. And were susceptible to how information is framed - a cash discount is more appealing than no credit card surcharge. Keeping these biases in mind can help you think clearly.Get some peace and quietElaina Giolando, a nomad and freelance writer, writes in Fortune about how she ultimately turned down a business fellowship and the different ways she arrived at the decision (and others). She writes that when making a big life choice, the first step is to try meditation. For me, this involved 10 days of intense, silent meditation in rural India. But you dont have to travel to the other side of the world for the same effects. Instead, set aside a quiet meditation space where you can listen to your heart. What does it communicate when its not panicked and inundated with other peoples ideas? Temporarily removing yourself from all external stimuli and ideas of who you should b e and what you should do allows you to access your own values and take ownership of the direction you want your life to take.

People can guess your name just by looking at your face

People can guess yur name just by looking at your facePeople can guess your name just by looking at your faceIts not uncommon to have a hunch about someones name based on their facial features. As it turns out, theres scientific evidence to back up this idea, according to researchin the Journal of Personality and Social Psychologypublished online in February 2017.It all boils down to the face-name matching effect, a way in which, the researchers say, both a social perceiver and a computer are able to accurately match a persons name to his or her face. They found that participants were able to do sosignificantly above chance level and thatcultural associations (stereotypes) about names play a role, and this may be partially because what people thought about the names welchesreportedly specific to a participants background. In case you think its just menschenfreundlich bias robots think we look alike too. The researchers found that computer that had been taught to match names to faces w ith a learning algorithm, when presented more thana whopping 94,000 pictures of faces, succeeded the majority of the time, nailing between 54% and 64% of its guesses.Who participated in the studyThe researchers carried outeight studies total- six where hundreds of French and Israeli participants matched names to faces (done in varying formats, with each study having different numbers of people) and featuring computer that had been taught a algorithm. But no matter who was participating in the study- human or machine- the participants were shown pictures of faces of people they didnt know, each one accompanied by different names one of which was the persons actual one. What the researchers foundOf all of the findings, here are a few that stood out.As the press release points out, during each study, human participants did better picking the right names (25-40% correct) than doing so randomly (20-25% correct), even when ethnicity, age and other socioeconomic variables were controlled for. It also states that when a computer participated during a study, it was 54-64% accurate, compared to50% accurate when doing so randomly, and that the results were culture-specific when humans participated.Study 5 also helped illustrate that people did better than choosing at random. Participants were shown a picture of a man with the choices Jacob, Josef, Nathaniel and Dan. Spoiler his name was Dan- they picked this name 38% of the time compared to the 25% chance level of a random guess. But it works both ways- peoples names sometimes impact their faces, which they hypothesize issomewhat of aDorian Gray Effect, citing prior research. The study found that the face-name match implies that people live up to their given name in their physical identity. The possibility that our name can influence our look, even to a small extent, is intriguing, suggesting the important role of social structuring in general and naming in particular in the complex interaction between the self and socie ty. We are subject to social structuring from the minute we are born, not only by our gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, but also by the simple choice that others make in giving us our name.Lead author Yonat Zwebner, a PhD candidate at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem when the research was carried out, commented on the findings in a statement, showing that stereotypes can play a role.We are familiar with such a process from other stereotypes, like ethnicity and gender where sometimes the stereotypical expectations of others affect who we becomePrior research has shown there are cultural stereotypes attached to names, including how someone should look. For instance, people are more likely to imagine a person named Bob to have a rounder face than a person named Tim. We believe these stereotypes can, over time, affect peoples facial appearance, Zwebner said.We sometimes attribute certain names to people based on cultural stereotypes, but its also possible for our names to i mpact how we present ourselves.

The Top 10 Executive Resume Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The Top 10 Executive Resume Mistakes and How to Avoid Them The Top 10 Executive Resume Mistakes and How to Avoid Them I have been looking at executive resumes for years, first as an HR VP managing the recruitment process and then more recently in my role as President of Blue Sky Resumes. Over the years, Ive seen executive candidates make many of the same mistakes over and over again, mistakes that cost them great opportunities, and yet are easily rectified.Ive boiled the list down to my top 10 and I hope it helps you to refine your own resume so that it truly communicates your unique value.Mistake 1 No clear titleA strong executive resume starts with a concise headline describing what you do (e.g. Marketing executive, sales leader etc). Without this, recruiters have no idea what roles you might be a fit for, and your resume will often be overlooked.Mistake 2 Dense, hard-to-read summary sectionIts common for executive candidates to feel that big words and long sentences are necessary to convey seniority and gravitas. In fact, they just put a barrier between you and the reader. Instead, use simple clear language and short punchy sentences.Mistake 3Resume introductions that try to say too muchAs a successful executive, you have many skills and many selling points. But if you try to include them all at the start of your resume, you will wind up with a long, hard-to-read summary that recruiters skip altogether. Instead, decide on your 2-3 key selling points and make those the centerpiece of your resume. Heres more on how to start your resume with a bang.Mistake 4 Missing keywordsMany resumes are scanned by computers prior to a human ever seeing them. This is especially true of executive recruiters who maintain large databases of candidates, and then scan those databases for keywords when a new opportunity arises. To be found, your resume must contain all the important words and phrases used in your profession or industry.Mistake 5 Too much detailYou might think that you need to include a lot of detail in order to show the level of your experience and to convey your executive responsibilities, but almost all executive resumes can be edited down without losing any power and impact. For example, if you run a 300 million business division with 150 staff and hold full PL responsibility, theres no need to spell out that you are responsible for hiring, firing, motivation etc (we know) or that you work closely with the CFO (we know) or that you develop strategic plans (of course you do). When it comes to executive resume writing, less is almost always more.Mistake 6 Too much focus on job descriptionsMany executives spend far too much time describing their responsibilities and not enough time talking about what they achieved in the role. As a rough guide, I recommend using 3-4 times as much space for your accomplishments as you use to describe your job responsibilities.Mistake 7 Not being specific about accomplishmentsDont just say that you turned the business around give the context (how badeanstalt were things before?) and the improvement. Use either numbers or percentages (choose whichever sounds most impressive) to emphasize the impact you made. For example Turned around under-performing company, transforming 10% sales decline into 32% increase in just 15 months. (Heres more information on creating effective bullet points).Mistake 8 Not including a LinkedIn profile URLIn this day and age, a LinkedIn profile URL is vital. It shows recruiters that you are on the ball and well-connected, and when done well your profile provides them with more information about you and your career, as well as some insight into your personality. If you are not on LinkedIn, recruiters will tend to assume that youre not tech-savvy and this is particularly damaging if you are over 50 and at risk of age discrimination. (Learn all you need to know about creating a good LinkedIn profile here).Mistake 9 One-size-fits-allDo you customize your resume ev ery time you apply for a position? If not, youre missing valuable opportunities to appeal to your target employer. Scour the job description for clues as to whats most important and then customize your resume to address those issues.Mistake 10 Formatting issuesKeep your resume formatting simple because too many fancy tricks can render it unreadable when its scanned by a computer system. Likewise, be sure to create your resume in MS Word dont send a version created in Mac Pages, for instance, because the formatting will not stay consistent when opened at the other end. And dont rely on PDF files because many computer systems cannot store or scan them for keywords. Its amazing how common these errors areYou might assume that most people at the executive level have a very strong resume, but actually the opposite is true. Most executive resumes are appallingly bad to put it bluntly. But this gives you a huge opportunity to shine. 5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job Posting

5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job Posting5 Tips for Writing a Resume Tailored to Fit a Legal Job PostingWhen it comes to applying for legal positions, a single, stock resume isnt enough. Positions at law firms and companies can be very specialized. Your resume should be, too.So when its time to move on to a new legal job, the first step is to update and adjust your resume for each position you apply to. These five tips for writing a resume tailored to fit a legal job posting can help you get noticed at the outset of the hiring process.1. Lean heavily on certain specialized skills and experience.Rather than overwhelm your potential employer with your entire list of credentials, cater to areas of the target firms specialization. For example, if youre applying for a senior paralegal job at a firm working primarily in civil litigation, be sure to expand on your experience working with a legal team to manage eDiscovery. Appropriately balance the weight of your varied areas of experience, emphasizing what most pertains to the position youre seeking.2. Do your research and craft the language of each resume accordingly. Before you customize a resume for a particular job, learn more about the place where you hope to work. Is there an About section or mission statement on the firm or companys website? Or do you have a contact in your professional network whom you can tap for insights? The goal is for the employer to see as the ideal candidate because of the fit between your career aspirations and and the organizations mission.3. Get specific with concrete numbers and data.Dont just list the years that you worked on this or that. Paint a clearer picture by including additional details in your resume such as, Conducted case history research for 55 immigration law cases over three years.4. Showcase your knowledge of recent regulatory changes and industry trends. In a changing regulatory environment, legal professionals should remain current with legal i ndustry trends and einhaltung requirements. When detailing recent work experience on your resume, try to highlight a situation that dealt with a recent change as it applies to the position youre seeking so its easier for the potential employer to notice youre on top of the latest developments.5. Dont bother with an Objective.Although its a ubiquitous part of most general resumes, an Objective section isnt obligatory for legal resumes. Instead, write a succinct summary of qualifications at the beginning of the resume, perhaps as bullet points. Remember to stick to skills and expertise while avoiding overlap with your experience section. Resume experts could help make sure your resume isnt stylistically outdated.Keep in mind that by following these tips for writing a resume, you may end up with several very different-looking resumes. Make sure they are well organized and readily accessible so that when calls for interviews start coming in, you can review specifics and prepare accordin gly. What are your top tips for writing a resume? Top 5 Ways to Boost Your Candidate Pool - Spark Hire

Top 5 Ways to Boost Your Candidate Pool - Spark HireThere are countless stories about highly-qualified job seekers who just cant seem to find work. As an HR manager, it may sometimes feel like these stories are wives tales, like your candidate pool is an exception or the good candidates just havent found you. So how do you reach all those highly-qualified job seekers you hear so much about and boost your candidate pool? Here are five ways to help bring job seekers to you.The Undercover Recruiter offers their own six tips for boosting your candidate pool, some of which Ive kept, and a couple of which Ive amended just a little.5. Sell your company culture. No one does this better I dont think than Google. Weve even written about it here. Google doesnt just advertise their jobs, they advertise the lifestyle which accompanies them. If you plan to spend over 40 hours a week somewhere, its not just important to have your listing seen, its important to have it show why people like working fo r you. I once applied for a job that asked about how awesome I was and my ping-pong skills. It was an intense job with a lot of man hours and the next interview even required a math test. But the initial post, tweeted out by an employee, helped draw me in initially.4. Make your employees your job sales people. As previously mentioned, the job I applied for I found from an employee I had met at a social media networking event. The people your employees are selling to are likely quality candidates whom they have met and may have previously vetted. Use your best (free) resources, your employees, to help advertise your openings.3. Utilize social media. The job in the first story I told, I found through social media. Use your own social media channels, and also connect with key job boards and social media accounts. I follow a Twitter account called NatsJobs. The account broadcasts the Washington Nationals score each half inning with an opening. If your target market is DC job seekers who m ight be interested in baseball/sports/local entertainment you may decide to spend some money to have them tweet out your listing. There are a number of examples of similar social media accounts which can connect you with your target job seekers.2. Creativity counts. This one Im stealing directly from The Undercover Recruiter, because well, they got to the heart of being creative. Look for anything, infographics, etc which might illuminate yourcompanysbest qualities in a unique way.1. Make your listing interesting. As I mentioned earlier, letting people know about your company culture in a job posting is important, but also let job seekers know what theyll be doing and how great it can be for them. There are plenty of great job seekers out there that would be perfect for your company. Use some of these tips and Im koranvers youll be rolling in top candidates in no time. Its all about selling yourself.Do you have any other tips for attracting top-quality job seekers? Let us know

4 Signs Youre Stuck in Your Comfort Zone- The Muse

4 Signs Youre Stuck in Your Comfort Zone- The Muse4 Signs Youre Stuck in Your Comfort Zone- The MuseYou regularly check off assignments and you keep your boss happy. You often feel busy- even stressed- at work. At the end of the day, you come home and crash. These are signs that youre working hard and killing it in your career, right? Not so fast. While you might think youre challenging yourself and moving toward your goals, you could be confusing daily frustrations and roadblocks for actual growth. You could be living smack dab in the middle of your comfort zone without even realizing it.That may leid sound so bad at first, but if you stay there too long, its easy to get stuck in a rut. Our worlds shrink or expand based on our willingness to do things outside of our comfort zone. While this growth can feel uncomfortable, it often is whats needed to propel you forward.Unsure if youre happy where you are or holding yourself back? Consider how long these four things have remained unchang ed1. Your PaycheckDid you accept a salary offer without negotiating? Have you been working year after year (and meeting all expectations) without asking for a raise? Warning You are totally in your comfort zone around your paycheck. What to DoChallenge yourself to ask for mora. Attend a salary negotiation workshop or consult with a coach to boost your skills. Ask for a meeting with your boss to discuss your performance, and bring your courage along with concrete examples of your accomplishments. Youre going to feel nervous (Everyone does). Push through it. The plan is to grow your take home pay, but even if youre told it cant happen this time, youll have more experience standing up for your amazing work to build on in the future.2. Your NetworkYoure attending industry networking events, going to your companys social events, and staying in touch with friends. But are you putting any time toward connecting with people who feel totally out of reach? How many industry leaders know your n ame? If the answer is none, youre networking within your comfort zone. What to DoMake a list of those people in your industry whom you admire and would absolutely love to meet. Then begin actively working to make a connection. Ask around to see if someone can make an introduction for you. Attend an event where theyre speaking and follow-up. Do a cold reach out over LinkedIn (Heres how). You may get rejected a few times, but if you stick with this goal persistently, you could start a relationship that boosts your career.3. Your To-Do ListTheres a difference between reactive tasks and proactive tasks, which are just what they sound like- things you do because they fall into your lap, versus what you seek out to further your goals. Emails the biggest reactive task of them all. If your whole day revolves around it (especially, at the expense of your other work), youre prioritizing work thats there, regardless if its meaningful. What to DoIdentify one project that is high value to your org anization and find a way to proactively put it into your day-to-day task list. Make sure you prioritize it over less-significant work. Initially, it may feel unsettling to leave an email unanswered for- gasp- an hour, while you give something else your undivided attention. Over time youll get better at maneuvering the balance between important, non-urgent tasks and all those unimportant things that demand your attention.4. Your Career GoalsDo you know what your career goals are? If so, are these goals that you personally care about- or are they ones that you attached to for the sake of it? This may be something you need to take some time to reflect on, because while it can be hard to see it at first, its possible to work very hard towards something that you dont even want. For example, you may be dedicating all of your time to advancing in your current career, but if you were honest with yourself, you know youd actually rather be doing something else. Its also possible to drift thro ugh your career without setting any goals at all. If either of these are happening, you are likely sticking with the familiar instead of pushing yourself towards growth. What to DoSet aside others opinions and recommendations, and dig into what actually matters to you. What would be both compelling and challenging for you? plattl a goal that you dont totally know how to accomplish, commit to it, and watch your abilities and confidence grow as you work towards it. This could be a small step like taking an online course or a larger one like launching a side business what matters is that you feel its supporting your desired career trajectory.Comfort zones are sneaky because they feel, well, comfortable. Obviously, Im not suggesting you push yourself to do scary, uncomfortable things every moment of every day. But I will encourage you to add some productive discomfort to your routine. When you push outside of your comfort zone, youll know that youre doing more than just busy work. Youll be actively growing your skills, your confidence, and your career.Photo of relaxed person courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

8 Personality Traits That Are Eroding Your Time Management Skills

8 Personality Traits That Are Eroding Your Time Management Skills 8 Personality Traits That Are Eroding Your Time Management Skills Time management is a skill we need in life and work, and “ if you often find yourself run down by your daily workload or overwhelmed by the complexity of projects and tasks in your life, it is likely because you have not fully mastered effective time management,” suggests Matt Mayberry , Maximum Performance Strategist. When it comes to work, your lack of time management can be a significant issue, leading to overdue projects, piled up work, and missed deadlines. Avoid the following eight things that are eroding your time management skills so you can eliminate the causes and be the best version of you in the workplace. If you’re trying to move forward in your career or make a good impression at a new job, the time to identify these issues is now. When you forget how to say “no” to projects and tasks, it’s easy to drown in your work and lose all sense of time management. With too many due dates to manage, it becomes impossible to find focus, which is critical to time management. Not to mention, by saying yes to everything, you lose the ability to work on things you care about: “By saying no, you are giving yourself the ability and bandwidth to say yes to the things that are more important,” says Craig Jarrow of Time Management Ninja . Clutter leads to a whole host of psychological issues that take a toll on time management. Psychology Today suggests a few ways that lack of organization can be a deterrent: Clutter and lack of organization holds your mind hostage. Rather than prioritizing what needs to get done, you’re trying to fend off mental fatigue, stress and anxiety, making time management nearly impossible. Brain breaks are one the best ways to manage your time. When you become burnt out on a project, your productivity slows drastically, you lose interest in what you’re doing, and before you know it, you’ve wasted 20 minutes staring at the screen wishing you weren’t at work. Brain breaks help you avoid this issue and have been proven to improve productivity by 34 percent, according to Unplug After Hours and Increase Productivity . This allows you to better manage your time and be more effective. When you’re perpetually running behind schedule, it’s impossible to manage your time effectively. When you’re late to work most days of the week, or slow to start on a project, your first thought isn’t managing your time, it’s more like: How quickly can I get this done because I’m already so behind? Goals provide structure to your work every by giving you a prioritized list of things to get done: “Your goals help you to identify your priorities. They outline what you want to achieve, when you want to achieve it by and the importance of the task,” according to 11 Symptoms of Poor Time Management . The author continues, “Goals are an essential way to reduce your workload and reduce your poor time management. Not only do you become clearer about what you want; you become more certain about the tasks and projects which are not a good use of your time.” Similar to a lack of defined goals, without a to-do list, it’s hard to structure your day. The key to time management is being able to prioritize tasks and a to-do list is the best way to do that, ensuring you get everything done. If you do have a to-do list, but still struggle with time management, your list may be too minimal or basic. When you add times and specifics for each item, you’ll be more successful. For example: With these details included, you know exactly what you’re doing and the timeframe for each task, which helps you stay on track. When everything needs to be just right, you tend to lose control of your time because you focus so much on one project or task that you ignore the others. While it’s important to produce work that you’re proud of, letting go of small issues that can be fixed later or ignored altogether allows you to make time for all the other items on your to-do list.   Everywhere you look there’s a distraction or time-sucker: on your computer (hello, Facebook), in the kitchen (quick chats turn into 20 minute conversations) and in meetings (which seem to go on forever). With distractions and interruptions, it’s hard to get into your workday effectively: “Distractions prevent us from achieving  flow, which is the satisfying and seemingly effortless work that we do when we’re 100 percent engaged in a task,” explain experts at MindTools . Are any of these a regular issue for you in the workplace? Identify what’s stopping you from being good about time management and then eliminate the cause so you can focus on getting more done effectively and efficiently.

Got Resume Writers Block Here Are 5 Cures

Got Resume Writer's Block Here Are 5 Cures 5 Cures for Resume Writer's Block Got Resume Writer's Block Here Are 5 Cures You know you need a resume to launch your job search. The problem is: You dont know where or how to begin. Essentially, youre staring at a blank page on your computer, save for your name, address, and contact information. Youve got a case of writers block: resume style. And you need to cure that malady fast! Here are five ways to help you break through it. Resume writers block can manifest itself in many ways. You may be facing one of these common dilemmas: You cant craft a strong, coherent Objective or Summary; Youre having a hard time expressing your top accomplishments in your most recent positions; Youre having difficulty separating the important stuff that belongs on the resume from the insignificant or not-so-important; or Probably the worst of this group: You dont really know what you want to do with your career. No matter what form it takes, if youre faced with resume writers block, you might want to take at least one of these five steps toward a cure: 1. Write down your career goal. Every effort starts with a goal in mind. If youre unclear what you really want in your next job, it will be tough to write an Objective or Summary. Your goal could be to branch out into a new area, or simply to find a decent company that will respect you and allow you to just do what you're doing now. Once you figure that out, the rest becomes easier because you can tailor your resume to support that specific goal. 2. Find the right mood or setting. Where can you concentrate best at a time of day when youre most productive and creative? In a quiet area of your home in the morning? Amid the noise of a coffee shop during the lunch-time rush? The right environment can make a difference. If you need to be in a more pleasant mood, go for a run or workout, then start writing after the endorphins have been unleashed inside your head. 3. Break your resume into chunks. If you find it a challenge to write your resume in one sitting, build it piece by piece. You could start at the top with your Objective or Summary (because it sets the tone for the rest of the resume). But it may be easier to start by filling in your Education, or the dates and titles from your past jobs in the Experience section. Just getting something down will help. Once youre satisfied with one part, put it down, take a break, and come back to build the next piece. 4. Start with a rough draft. Just write your resume in rough form. Then, edit it (have someone else read it too if you wish), write a second draft, edit it again. Write a third draft, edit again you get the idea. Sometimes the best work takes several drafts before youre satisfied. 5. Set some deadlines. If you thrive on structure and setting a time limit, give yourself a deadline for completing the resume. If youre not under intense time pressure to get it done (say, less than a week), set a deadline for each part of the resume or for each draft. Then stick to each deadline. An important document such as your resume should never be rushed, but at the same time, you never know how quickly you need one. Yet, if youre having a hard time writing a resume, follow these suggestions to ensure your resume will be done right and enhance your chances at landing the job you want.

5 excuses that will get you nowhere

5 excuses that will get you nowhere 5 excuses that will get you nowhere Certain excuses won’t put you in a very productive mindset. Here’s what you should never mutter to yourself at work or during the application process.“I can’t deal with this.”Saying “I can’t” certainly doesn’t shine a light on your talents in a work setting. It seems like you’re approaching things with a defeatist attitude, instead of working to find a solution to what’s going on.Instead of simply saying “I can’t,” come up with something that you can do in its place, or admit that you don’t have the knowledge or expertise to get something done and recommend someone who may be a better help.“I don’t have time.”Jonathan Long, founder of performance-based online marketing agency Market Domination Media, influencer marketing agency blerrp and co-founder of the  Sexy Smile Kit, says in Entrepreneur  that  entrepreneurs make this excuse too often.“Time is our most valuable asset,” he writes. “While we only have 24 hours in a day, we make time for t hings we want - people we want to see, activities we want to do, etc. The only thing getting in the way are excuses.Ӊ€œI’m sorry I’m late.”After waking up late for the third time this week, you pull yourself into the car, step on the gas, and waltz into work late for the umpteenth time.Marshall Goldsmith, a business educator, coach and author, writes on his website about why giving an excuse for being late doesn’t change anything.“When you’re late to an appointment and you hear yourself saying, ‘I’m sorry I’m late but the traffic was murder,’ stop at the word ‘sorry.’ Blaming traffic doesn’t excuse the fact that you kept people waiting,” Goldsmith syas. “You should have started earlier. You certainly won’t have to apologize for: ‘I’m sorry I’m early, but I left too soon and the traffic was moving along just fine.’ If the world worked like that, there would be no excuses.Ӊ€œMy résumé is just going to get submitted into an online black hole, so I’m not going to bother.”This is an excuse used frequently by job seekers, Vicki Salemi - an author, public speaker, columnist and Monster career expert - says  in U.S. News and World Report.“That’s like forfeiting a ballgame by not even showing up. You owe it to yourself to show up,” Salemi writes. “The applicant tracking system (better known as the ATS), will get inundated with résumés pegged to each specific job opening, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply.“While it does help to have a referral so your résumé is flagged differently in the system for recruiters to easily spot, don’t give up. Definitely apply.” she continues.“That’s not my job.”This one’s a classic.John Brandon, Contributing Editor at Inc. Magazine and Inc.com., writes in Inc. that this is one of the excuses that “unproductive people” rely on. He writes about how the people who really keep things moving at work don’t fall into this trap.“I’ve written befo re about staying productive by focusing on your job and not doing the work of unproductive co-workers. That’s always a bad pattern to set,” Brandon explains. “Curious, then, that the really unproductive people always seem to notice when they’re doing extra work to help a project. They focus on their role too much and on what everyone else is not doing.“Truly productive people don’t even care. They just do whatever it takes to get things done and plow ahead, analyzing the exact role definitions later,” Brandon adds.

Top 5 Ways 3D Printing Is Changing the Medical Field

Top 5 Ways 3D Printing Is Changing the Medical Field Top 5 Ways 3D Printing Is Changing the Medical Field Top 5 Ways 3D Printing Is Changing the Medical Field Every year, 3D printing offers more and more promise in the healthcare field. And while the ultimate goal of printing whole complex organs for transplants may still be decades away, 3D printing is helping to save and improve lives in ways - and in places - never imagined just a few years ago. 1) 3D Printing Labs in Hospitals One of the more immediate emerging trends is the use of 3D printing directly in hospitals, said Dr. Justin Ryan, a biomedical engineer and research scientist at Phoenix Childrens Hospitals Cardiac 3D Print Lab. Up until a couple of years ago, there were only a few hospitals doing 3D printing directly in the hospital. Now, hospitals across the U.S and around the globe are setting up 3D printing labs within their complexes so that healthcare professionals can incorporate the process into a normal days work. In fact, Ryans lab has collaborated with more than 15 institutions spanning six countries. The work primarily focuses on printing patient-specific models prior to surgery to look at a patients specific anatomy, and in the past four years, Ryans lab has 3D printed more than 300 hearts. A doctor can look at and practice on a customized 3D printed model prior to surgery. Then we potentially have a better surgical outcome, Ryan said. He hypothesizes that the doctor is better trained, there will be less time in the surgical suite, less time for a patient to be under anesthesia, less time to have patients open to the environment. Hopefully, it reduces morbidity and mortality, he said. A clinical trial is now underway to better understand the impact of models on surgical outcomes. Ermarth / Wikimedia Commons 2) Low-Cost Prosthetics Spurred on by interest from non-profits, 3D printed patient-specific prosthetics, often produced on low-cost, MakerBot-style printers, are having a major impact, especially in developing countries. The prosthetics come with the latest technology and are changing the lives of people who in the past had no hope of ever receiving these devices. Organizations like ROMP (Range of Motion Project) and Not Impossible use 3D printing to build low-cost, high-quality prosthetic limbs and orthotic braces for patients who otherwise would never receive them. E-Nable encourages engineers and others the world over to build hands and arms on their own 3D printers in their spare time, using E-Nables open source designs. The organization estimates it has delivered about 1,800 hands so far, mostly to children, but it believes that another 1,800 have been produced outside of its documented process. 3) Customized Medical Implants Thousands of 3D printed replacements for bony body parts: knees, hips, ankles, parts of the spine, and skull, are implanted every year, and the future holds more promise with 3D printed patient-specific parts. Although not generally approved by the Food Drug Administration, some have taken place under FDAs emergency clearance process. Using 3D imaging, doctors create a virtual map of a patients knee. Image: Lee Memorial Health System One widely publicized was a tracheal splint developed at the University of Michigan for an infant born with a congenitally defective trachea so weak that it collapsed even after conventional treatment. The bioengineering-surgical team used a CT scan of the infant to 3D print a replica of the infants anatomy to create a splint to wrap around the weakened trachea. Tissue from the infants bronchus was sewn inside the splint. The device was made of a material similar to that for absorbable sutures so that as the childs trachea repaired itself it would gradually be absorbed. Implants such as these can leverage 3D-printings properties, such as customization and better integration as the patients own tissue starts to grow, Ryan said. With traditional printing, you can get good integration on the surface but not throughout. 4) Customized Protective Devices and Aids 3D printing is enabling high-quality, rapid, low-cost production of everything from dental implants to hearing aids, from prescription eyeglasses to headgear that fit better, work better, and offer better protection. 5) Future: Biomaterials for Organ Structures and Complex Organs Although some trace the origins of tissue engineering back to the mid-1600s with the identification of cells, its often considered a young field as a modern scientific discipline since it began ramping up toward the end of the last century. With the development of 3D printing, the prospect of being able to reproduce human organs out of biomaterial suddenly seemed more than a pipe dream. Taking a step at a time, researchers started with simpler structures such as skin, blood vessels, cartilage, bone, and the bladder, along with parts of more complex organs, such as heart valves, and have made considerable progress. Part of the challenge of printing complex organs is that organs need oxygen and nutrients, said Ryan. The challenge is printing blood vessels at the same time as printing organs. Outside of that, its also the concept that an organ isnt just tissue but what you might refer to loosely as memory, so your heart isnt just a collection of cells, its also the tissue that supports the tissues that lead to thousands and thousands of heartbeats. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. A doctor can look at and practice on a customized 3D printed model prior to surgery. Then we potentially have a better surgical outcome.Dr. Justin Ryan, Phoenix Childrens Hospital

17 women on getting the job, growing a paycheck, getting ahead

17 women on getting the job, growing a paycheck, getting ahead 17 women on getting the job, growing a paycheck, getting ahead Everyone wants advice from the most successful businesswomen out there: Sheryl Sandberg. Indra Nooyi. Meg Whitman. But anyone would be smart to take advice from a little closer to home, too: your boss, your coworkers, your professional connections. No matter the level, industry, or location, we can all learn something from each other.Business Insider surveyed women across various industries about their advice for others. Responses ranged from advice on knowing your worth to effectively communicating your vision to a team. For example: Remember that getting your job wasn’t a fluke. You deserve to be there. Keep a list of your accomplishments and skills so you can refer back. If you’re dreading a job or project, you aren’t being paid enough. Don’t give up your life for a job. Below, read 17 different women’s best career advice, lightly edited for clarity:Find your advocates, and take a seat at the table“Find your advocates.“As women, we often have to work twice as hard for our performance to be recognized. Participating in teams, committees, even if it doesn’t pertain to your role, will help build a network of advocates of varying levels across the organization.“Always expect your name will come up when you’re not in the room - the more advocates you have, the more people will root for you when opportunities arise.“And always take a seat at the table. You deserve to be there.”- Jen, 30, New York City Director of Sales working in Adtech/MediaDon’t work for free“For new entrepreneurs, do not work for free or undervalue yourself! You are more than capable and qualified.“Too many times starting out I said ‘yes’ to a low-ball offer or free work for the mere possibility of leads, only to end up spending far too much time on a project that yielded too little compensation.“I heard a thought one time: ‘If you wake up in the morning dreading working on a project, you asked for too little money,’ and that couldn’t be more true. If you feel valued, the work never feels like a drag.“As a new entrepreneur (or even more experienced!), lack of confidence is common after the initial excitement wears off. It’s easier to feel confident as an employee because you receive regular feedback on your quality of workmanship. Don’t let fear of failure drive you to accept less than you’re worth.”- Stacey, 28, Austin, Texas Business Owner: Nutrition Communications MediaRecognize who is on your team“When someone is on your team, they are on your team for life.“I am a big networker, and recently someone I really admire told me he was ‘on my team.’ I took this to mean I did not need to try as hard to impress him - he was already impressed!“Inevitably in professional relationships and in networking you’ll transition from wanting to impress someone to being their friend, or at least someone they respect and like. Recognize when that transition happens and breathe a sigh of relief! I keep a list of people who are ‘on my team’ and look to them for support and advice, as well as professional advancement.”- Alex, 30, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina Associate AttorneyFocus on your impact“One key mindset shift that will support living your best life and career is to focus less on achieving titles, external ‘shoulds,’ and cultural norms, and instead focus on, ‘What contribution are you making?’ in all areas of your life.“f you are contributing in a way that’s in line with your strengths and values, you will ultimately make momentous progress and create deep fulfillment and meaningful impact.”- Sarah, 37, Seattle Executive Coach + Business Consultant, Leadership Development/Executive DevelopmentDon’t be swayed by branding“Choose the people, not a fancy company name.”- Jen, 40ish, New York City MarketingKnow your worth, and don’t accept anything less“There are plenty of articles, research pieces, and self-help books telling women to assert themselves in the workforce, both in terms of taking on responsibility and requesting proper compensation for our work.“But women are still not taking this far enough; I could talk about the societal reasons why we struggle with this forever. However, I will stick to the advice: Do your job well, ask for a raise every year, act on the promotion when the opportunity arises, and if your employer isn’t responding to your requests, then get a new job.“Because I can guarantee you there are plenty of other employers out there who will see your value immediately upon interview and offer you more money, better benefits, and a more fitting title. We need to increase the amount of women in high level positions in all sectors, and it could be you.”- Aileen, 25, New York City Public Sector/Local GovernmentIf you don’t like something, change it“Be confident. In your presence, your ideas, your position. And, if you don’t like something, change it.”- Anonymous, 29, Portland, Oregon Marketing ManagerKnow your options“Acknowledge that you don’t know what you don’t know and speak with as many diverse professionals as you can to understand your career options.”- Lydia, 30, San Francisco Tech directorIt’s OK to make mistakes“It’s OK to make mistakes, but learn from them and keep moving forward. Don’t be lazy. And never give up.”- Bouchra, 30, New York City Fashion Tech CEOKeep track of your accomplishments“We tend to forget how good we are at things, so keep a list of all the achievements you have ever accomplished and it will help you to remember how great you actually are. It helps you raise your confidence and trust yourself.”- Christine, 34, Luxembourg Health and wellness entrepreneurYou deserve your job“Getting your job wasn’t a fluke. You deserve to be there, and earned it just as much as the person sitting next to you. You can’t let impostor syndrome stop you from being your best.“Also, side hustles and personal projects keep you sane, independent, and passionate.”- Navah, 24, New York City Marketing AssociateDon’t wait for permission to go after what you want“Don’t wait for anyone else to give you permission to go after what you want.“I spent a full year trying to apply for the type of position I wanted when I was trying to break into professional writing. It was also a full year of hearing nothing, or going to interviews only to be told ‘no.’“I finally realized that I was wasting my time trying to prove myself to hiring managers, or convincing someone to take a shot on me and let me show how good I was. I quit sending in applications (and getting rejected), hung out my shingle as a freelance writer, and hustled hard.“In less than a year after I decided to take a chance on myself instead of waiting for someone else to give me permission to start doing what I loved, I made three times as much as I earned in my day job, quit, and became a full-time freelance writer and content marketer. And I’ve never looked back. Don’t wait for someone else to say, â €˜you can do this’ or give you a chance. Get out there and prove it for yourself.“Also, all the advice in the world may not be able to teach you as much as experience. Sometimes, the only way to figure this stuff out is to go out there, screw up, and learn from that failure.“Other people’s advice can help you avoid making the same mistakes, but sometimes you need to go out there and totally flop before you really get it on a deep level. Don’t be afraid of that flop. Just be mindful, and seek to understand what failures can teach you, or show you about yourself.”- Kali, 28, Boston MarketingWith discomfort comes growth“I’ve made the most career advancement when I have been most uncomfortable. Remind yourself as you are pushing through the tough times that with discomfort comes growth.“And never be afraid to admit what you don’t know! It’s my most overused expression: ‘I don’t know what I don’t know.’ Embrace it!”- Suzanne, 46, New York City Personal finance SVPEmpathize with your coworkers“Things are not always as they appear. You can use empathy to identify or validate what you suspect with team members, peers, and leaders in the workplace.”- Patricia, mid-career, Seattle Business and leadership development consultantMake your vision a shared one“When it comes to leading a team, it is important to get buy-in to both short-term and long-term initiatives. Day-to-day tasks will become more motivating to employees if they understand how their responsibilities play into the bigger picture. It is key to outwardly and consistently communicate this vision so that it becomes a shared one.“As women, it is important to advocate for ourselves. If you are a startup founder or an employee of a company, you must be willing to continuously share your value to stakeholders.”- Jasmine, 27, Chicago Technology cofounder and CEOBe the leader you look up to“Show up, be prepared, stay consistent, and you’ll be ready when an opportunity comes your way.“If you don’t like public speaking, work on it. This is a skill almost anyone will need at some point in time and you want to feel confident when you need to speak in front of a group.“Be the leader you look up to. A good leader lifts the group moral and wants members to succeed.“Always have confidence (even if you need to fake it a little). Confidence is important.”- Caroline, 29, New York City Psychotherapist in private practice and group fitness instructorMore work doesn’t mean better work“Your worth is often defined by someone else in your career, and you may have no control over how they see you or value you and your skills.“There may be times when you’ve worked your socks off, went above and beyond, and you feel like it’s shoved back in your face. Learn from that. Don’t undersell yourself, and don’t believe anyone who undervalues you. You may be stuck with their decision for a while, but don’t take that belief and make it your own.“Also, you can do an excellent job without giving up all of your spare time and jumping through a million hoops. The idea that the longer you work, the better job you do or the more you deserve a pay rise or promotion, is outdated. Research shows that we work better and produce stronger work when we work less and have regular breaks. Don’t give up your life for a job.”- Danielle, 38, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England Digital marketing managerThis article first appeared on Business Insider.

Using Diversity to Your Advantage

Using Diversity to Your Advantage Using Diversity to Your Advantage The law may not require it, but hiring companies demand a diverse pool of employees and candidates.Being a job seeker from a diverse racial, ethnic or economic background can be an advantage while working with recruiters. It’s a hot-button issue, for sure; some recruiters asked to comment for this article declined to do so, while others couldn’t understand why the issue wasn’t discussed more openly. Recruiters and their clients are hungry for a qualified, diverse candidate pool. The law may not require it, but clients demand it. For an executive recruiter and for job seekers, diversity can be a tactical advantage against the competition. In an employers’ market, presenting a candidate who belongs to a specific “minority group” could be the edge the recruiter needs with businesses that are trying to fill positions and provide opportunities for minority workers, said a recruiter who works with a large telecommunications company that wished to remain anonymous. “We’re delu ged with resumes. Job seekers are struggling to find ways to differentiate themselves, and I encourage applicants, if you have an advantage, to use it!Ӊ€œIf candidates are African-American, if they’re women, if they’re Latino, I will take an extra look at them, absolutely,” said the recruiter. “My clients that are hiring are competing for top diversity talent right now.”Diversity recruiting is driven by three prevailing currents in human resources, said the same recruiter: First, because it’s the “right thing to do,” he said. Second, employers must follow Equal Opportunity Employment law best practices and avoid discrimination lawsuits. (While the EOE prohibits considering race, gender, ethnicity and the like in hiring decisions, maintaining a diverse workforce is considered a defense against claims of discrimination.)“It can sound crass, but no company wants to deal with a discrimination lawsuit,” he said. “They’re costly, they leave a terrible impression on the minds of potential employees and clients. No one wants to work for or with a company that has a reputation as being bigoted. The third factor driving the demand for diverse candidates is pure capitalism: It’s good for business. Hiring from different ethnicities and backgrounds can bring new perspectives and fresh ideas that are invaluable in a competitive marketplace, he said.“Of course, it’s 2010 - our clients know that top-performing talent can come from any background, can be any gender, religion, race, and today’s companies want to do right by their employees.”Reflecting the MarketplaceDiversity is of particular importance to government agencies that strive to build a workforce that matches the ethnic and economic backgrounds of the constituencies they serve.Federal, state and city agencies regularly use outreach and hiring programs to actively recruit candidates from a variety of backgrounds.“‘Equal Opportunity Employer’ isn’t just a boilerplate phrase we tack onto the end of our documents, Web sites, what have you,” said one recruiter for a government agency who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak. “We really believe that our organization should represent the diversity of our [population].Ӊ€œWe have so many informational and hiring events with women, African-Americans, Latinos, you name it,” the recruiter said. “We build relationships … throughout the city and on college campuses, too.”

The Most Important Part of Your Employee Referral Program It#8217;s Not the Candidate Experience

The Most Important Part of Your Employee Referral Program It#8217;s Not the Candidate Experience The Most Important Part of Your Employee Referral Program It#8217;s Not the Candidate Experience No, the most important part of your employee referral program is not the candidate experience â€" its  the referrer experience. If you want to create a culture of referrals for hiring both inside and outside your company, it will depend  entirely on this. Your product brand depends a lot on customer referrals and, by extension,  the customer experience. Similarly, your employer brand depends a lot on candidate referrals and, by extension, the referrer experience. A lot, if not most, of your stellar candidates come through referrals. Referrals may not always come through your official referral program. They might come from someone on your team, someone in the community, or a random person  on the internet. If you want to make employee referrals a sustainable and scalable hiring strategy, you have to care about the referrer experience. A Typical Referrer Experience In order to build a great customer experience, you have to talk to a lot of customers and develop a strong sense of empathy. You have to walk in their shoes and see through their eyes. Similarly, in order to build a great referrer experience, you have to talk to a lot of referrers and have empathy for them. Lets put ourselves in the prospective referrers shoes. It usually starts with a request from the hiring team: Do you know any good software engineers? Acme is looking for one. You think: Okay, I do, but everyone I know is either gainfully employed? or the kind of person Id have a coffee with but not really want to work alongside. They get requests from people like you all the time. If they took those calls, theyd never get any work done; theyd just be interviewing  24/7. But you still want to help. You keep thinking: I bet theres someone who might be open to a new job. You rack your brain. Youre late for a meeting at work and forget about it. You go home that day to find that Acme has announced a $5,000 referral bonus. Thats cool! You want to think of someone. You start going through your mental rolodex of favorite past colleagues, and you think of Henry. You wonder what hes up to these days, so you Google him. Henry is a senior software engineer, but his profile says he just joined Pied Piper three months ago. Hes probably not looking for something new. The next day, you run into your friend Julie at a party. She asks if Acme is hiring any product managers, because shes getting tired of her job at Dunder Mifflin. Oh. Er uh. Youre not sure, but you assure her youll check and get back to her. You ask her if shes open to being an engineer since Acmes definitely looking for those. She introduces you to her friend Joe, whos also considering leaving Dunder Mifflin. After you politely exchange contact information, Joe emails you the next day with a link to his Github and asks if you could forward it to the hiring team. He seems like a nice enough guy, and you want to help him out. But what if he doesnt interview well? You have never worked with him before, so you cant really vouch for him. You decide to table the issue and ask your colleagues for advice in person. You decide to refer Joe, because your colleagues advise you that hes worth at least a conversation. You set out to forward his email to the recruiting team, and as you start to compose your own referral email,  you get anxious. What should you say, exactly? After about half an hour of deliberation and  multiple edits, you end up with something neutral, like this: Fwd: Joe Smith referral for Software Engineer position Hi, I met Joe recently through a friend, and he was interested in learning more about the software engineer position. Ive forwarded a link to his Github below. Thanks! A couple of weeks go by, and you run into Joe again. This time, you grab a beer with him and talk about the new React Native programming framework from Facebook. Hes actually quite knowledgable about it and  makes some really good points about the tradeoffs. You think, This guy knows his stuff. Phew â€" glad I referred him. Then Joe says, Hey, so I came in to interview the other day but didnt see you around. I was hoping to swing by your desk and grab a coffee on my way out. Any inside info about how it went? Woah. Joe already came in and interviewed? You didnt even know that theyd decided to move forward with him! At least this means they got back to him, which is something. Youre a bit tongue tied. Er uh, Im not sure? â€" Im not really involved in that side of things, but Ill keep my ear to the ground for you and see whats up. Oh, says Joe. I just figured that if they gave me an interview on your word, then youre probably pretty well respected around Acme. No sweat. I really appreciate you putting me on the radar there. I applied to a few other places, and they dont even respond to my emails. Leaving the bar, youre kind of annoyed. Why didnt anyone tell you that Joe came in for an interview? You could have been helpful! And now you looked like an ass in front of him, which may have damaged his impression of you and the company. Thats approximately where your experience as a referrer ends at most companies â€" until the day  you see Joe in the cafeteria. Hey Joe! Fancy seeing you here! I presume things worked out? “Oh yeah, I started like three weeks ago, he says. I actually referred Julie for the product manager position on my team, and since they just announced a new referral bonus, Im going to make an extra $3,000! Building a Better Referral Experience Experiences like this are more common than you might think. They might even be happening in your company. Its important to take a step back and intentionally try to design an exceptional referrer experience. Heres a way to start doing this â€" but Ill save the details for another post: Interview the last five people in your company who  referred someone and ask them what their experience was like. Interview the last five candidates who  came in through referrals and the last five candidates who didnt. Map out the differences between their experiences and identify where the referrers helped. Figure out how you can make more of that happen. Write a one-page set of guidelines about how youd like referrers to be treated by your company. Vinayak Ranade is the founder and CEO of Drafted, the first referral network that makes referral-based hiring fast, fun, and rewarding for everyone.
